Why I became a dentist (and it was not because of the Rudolph Christmas special)

Posted .

I love my job. Seriously. Being a dentist is the best.
Not everyone can say that, right? How many people do you know who look forward to going to work every day?
I do. As a dentist, I get to meet new people all the time. Sure, some days are more stressful than others, but I always know that my work has made a difference.
So, people often ask me why I became a dentist. Here’s the not-so-short answer.

It wasn’t because of Hermey. While I did watch the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer tv special when I was a kid, I didn’t decide then that I wanted to be a dentist. Hermey knew as a young elf that he wanted to be a dentist, but it took me longer to figure it out.

No day is ever the same. Some people love the stability of working in a corporate office. Not me. I always knew I had to be on the go, and I couldn’t sit behind a desk all day. As a Blue Ash dentist, I stay active and meet new people every day.

I love people. Even as a kid, I knew I liked to be around people. So, it just made sense for me to choose a career that allowed me to interact with people. I’m outgoing by nature, and it’s a blast for me to get to know my dental patients. Also, I love kids. Since I’m a dad, I think it makes it even easier to relate to the kids and families who come to our office. Besides, sometimes I still think of myself as a big kid at heart.

I needed to help people. When I was considering careers, I knew I wanted to choose a profession where I could help people. Keeping my patients’ smiles beautiful and healthy is incredibly rewarding. Sometimes, I’ll get dental patients who are embarrassed to smile because of some issue they might be having. I love nothing more than to restore that patient’s smile and to restore their confidence. Plus, it’s been scientifically proven that people who smile a genuinely confident, happy smile could live as many as seven years longer than the average person. So, if I can be a part of helping people live longer, then all the better!
Smiling’s my favorite. Like Buddy the Elf, smiling’s my favorite. We only have one life to live, so why not smile while we have the chance, right?
